Women Empowerment taking new dimensions in Khandwa
Date - 2 April, 2020 - Supporting Khandwa administration’s crucial initiatives in responding to the global pandemic of Coronavirus, women in Self Help Groups (SHGs) have shouldered to a unique initiative across the district.
Early in March, campaigns on awareness of Coronavirus and prevention of COVID-19 were organised for SHG members. They were to sensitize their family members and local communities. This enabled them to create mass awareness of this disease mainly among women in rural and semi-urban areas.
Seeing the public demand for masks and sanitizers, Maa- Gayatri SHG from State Livelihood Mission in the Bangarda village of Punasa Block who had prior experience in stitching uniforms for school children took on this activity. Today nearly 50 women with a combined capacity of 1000 masks per day are working round-the-clock for these much-needed items. The SHG is being provided raw material for the masks and sanitizers by Punasa Sub Divisional Magistrate Mrs. Mamta Khede.
The SHGs have supplied nearly 7000 masks and 100 litres of sanitizer so far to Mundi Municipal Council, village health workers and the common public. The masks are sold at reasonable rates of Rs 10/ piece.
Another SHG group of 13 women from Gokulgaon village is working endlessly . The group has supplied over 750 masks and 800 litres of sanitizers yet.Unnati SHG from Borgaonkhurd consisting of 12 women has also started preparing masks in responding to the global pandemic of Coronavirus.
Similarly,women from Asha SHG in the Pandhana block of the district have also joined hands for this noble cause.
District Magistrate of Khandwa Mrs. Tanvi Sundriyal said: "The masks and sanitizers produced by the women are proving to be very helpful. The administration plans to take this initiative and slowly implement it in all villages of the district as well as in urban areas in due time .”
